Extra attention is being paid to studying digital devices following recent disclosure scandals
Long waits can derail investigations as time limits on cases loom and trials face delays.
The recent disclosure scandal, in which trials collapsed after information on a complainant’s mobile phone exonerated the defendant, means that more devices are being processed. Forces across the UK have up to 2,000 digital devices awaiting analysis at any time, figures obtained by The Times showed.
Across the 33 forces that provided data, there were a total of 12,667 devices awaiting examination, and nine forces had more than 500 digital devices awaiting examination.
The force with the biggest backlog was Greater Manchester with 2,052, followed by Cheshire with 1,480 and Northumbria with 999.
